In alignment with the majority of quality open access journals, most JMIR Publications journals have fees (see: Are there costs involved in publishing in JMIR journals, what are your fees?). However, some JMIR Publications journals are free (see: Which JMIR journals are currently free to publish in?)
JMIR Publications has an APF Support policy and application process for authors to determine their manuscript's eligibility for APF support (in the form of a discount or waiver).
Various sources of authors' funding for publication include one or more of:
- Research grants
- Educational/Academic funds (e.g., for conference events, educational activities)
- Other discretionary funds
- Institutional OA funds
- Institutional memberships/partnerships (e.g., Institutional Partners)
- Other sources
Some universities, institutions or departments have institutional partnership arrangements with JMIR Publications, in which case the APF can be waived. Examples include:
- APF Support for Corresponding Authors from the University of California
- Frequently Asked Questions About The National Library of Sweden/Bibsam Consortium Deal
- Frequently Asked Questions About Jisc Funding
Other institutions may have institutional open access funds, for example, the signatories of the Compact for Open Access Equity.
Authors are able to split the APF for a payment from different sources/funds. See Can multiple authors split a payment?), so there may be a mix of the above for any certain article.
