In the review request email, in the first line, there is a link to the peer-review form (e.g. https://www.jmir.org/reviewer/submission/166100?key=xxxxxx) , where you have to click the green CONTINUE button under "Accept or Decline Review Request after selecting "I agree to review this" radio button.
After accepting the request, you can find the paper on the same URL under "Download Options" - click any of the download buttons (see Where do I find the papers I've been asked to review? and also How does the JMIR peer-review form look like?)
You do not need to login - simply click on that link in the email.
Reviewer Guidelines
Thank you for agreeing to peer-review a manuscript for a JMIR Publications journal!
Our aim is to be as fast as possible in our review process while maintaining high quality. Please look at the manuscript immediately upon agreeing to review it. We greatly appreciate your timely review.
Scope
If you have any questions regarding the focus and scope of the journal, please refer to the Instructions for Authors (http://www.jmir.org/instruction.htm) or the journal website (https://jmir.org/about-journal/focus-and-scope). Please provide your comments on the originality of the paper, validity of the conclusions and clarity of the writing. You will be asked to score the scientific English quality however it is not necessary to highlight grammatical or spelling errors.
Article Type
Please note that each journal publishes a wide variety of article types (original research papers, short papers, viewpoints, research letters, reviews, etc.). The article type can be found in the Review Form in the expandable “Additional Information” field. Please be sure your review considers the article type when reviewing (e.g. viewpoints are quite different from an original research paper). If reviewing for JMIR Research Protocols, please review additional special considerations for reviewing protocol papers.
Reviewer Conduct
Do not discuss the paper with its authors either during or after the review process. This practice is prohibited because it can compromise the integrity of the peer-review process. Additionally, the content of a manuscript in review should be deemed confidential until after publication. This means that content should not be cited, discussed, or used in any way before it is published.
Peer reviewers are expected to adhere to ethical best practices in peer review. Potential misconduct will be investigated and handled according to COPE guidance. For additional guidance, see: How to write a high-quality peer review.
Extending Review Deadline
We understand that on occasion unforeseen circumstances may prevent rapid peer review of a manuscript within the allotted timeframe. In those rare situations, please extend the review deadline if necessary. Please note that a deadline extension is not available for fast-tracked manuscripts.
After Accepting to Review
If you accept the review request, please proceed with the following steps to complete and submit your peer-review report:
You may complete the Reviewer Report Form in-browser, or copy the text below into a word processor of choice to complete. Please note that when you copy/paste text into the review form, formatting, such as bold, italics, etc, are not retained when you submit your review comments.
There are two main sections for the peer reviewer to complete. We provide recommendations below on what you may include in each section. Also, please review this guidance: How to write a high-quality peer review

II. 1. Confidential Comments for the Editor:
[Tell us what you think and especially comment if the manuscript does not appear to meet one of the JMIR Publications acceptance criteria, e.g.,: the study conducted is ethical; the material is original; prior/related work is discussed and cited appropriate; the writing is clear; the study methods are appropriate; the data are valid; the conclusions are reasonable and supported by the data; the information is important; and the topic is interesting for readership]
2. Please note any potential conflicts of interest you have, which would interfere with your objectivity.
3. If there are any parts of the manuscript, which you cannot referee because of lack of expertise in this area (e.g., statistics, English), please specify here. If you have suggestions for external reviewers, who could assess the respective part, please add recommendations here:
4. Note here if you are interested in writing a commentary about this paper (outline its content).

Comments For the Author can be organized according to these brief tips:
- Provide an introductory paragraph (general comments) that summarizes the major findings of the article, gives your overall impression of the paper, and highlights its major shortcomings.
- Then, provide specific, constructive comments, which can be listed as major or minor comments for authors to address point-by-point.
- Numbering comments is helpful for the editor and for the author to organize their responses.
- Comments do not need to be stated as conditions for acceptance. You may provide such remarks in the confidential comments to the editor.
- It is not necessary to comment on the acceptability of a paper.
- Please do not suggest or self-cite your own work unless the work is uniquely applicable to the paper. JMIR Publications follows a single blind peer review policy and self-citation may reveal your identity to the authors.
- Do not make offensive or rude remarks in peer reviews.
- For further guidance, see: How to write a high-quality peer review
Confidential comments can include advice to the editor of your recommendation for acceptance, revision and resubmission/re-review, or rejection. You do not need to repeat or copy/paste comments for the authors into the section on comments for the editor.
How to submit your review
- To submit your review, please come back to this page and begin at Step 2. Select an overall decision, priority, and suggest transfer to different journal(s) if necessary.
- With your completed comments in the peer review template (from above), please copy/paste the content of your peer review into the two textboxes, one for Comments to the Authors and one for Confidential Comments for Editor.
- When you submit your review, we kindly request your feedback on questions about your peer review experience. Your feedback helps us to improve the reviewing and publishing experience.
- You MUST click "Submit Review” to register your comments to the author and editor. After this, no further edits to the review are possible.
Thank you for submitting your high-quality peer review!
