JMIR Publications welcomes co-reviewing as a valuable way for early-career researchers to get peer reviewing experience.
In co-reviewing, only one reviewer will be formally involved in our peer review platform to submit the review. This reviewer will be recognized as the lead reviewer and should be the more senior reviewer of the two.
In order to request co-review for an article you have been invited to, email ed-support@jmir.org with the following information. The co-reviewing request must be approved before sharing the manuscript:
- The co-reviewer's full name and institutional affiliation
- Their institutional email address
- Their ORCID iD
- Their relationship to you (e.g., doctoral student, postdoc, lab colleague)
- Confirmation that the co-reviewer does not have a conflict of interest with the authors (the same standard we ask of any reviewer)
If the Editorial Office approves the co-reviewing request, follow the steps:
- Complete and submit the review yourself on the review platform.
- In the confidential comments to the editor, note that this was a co-review and briefly describe each person's contribution.
Please do not share the manuscript with anyone beyond the co-reviewer approved.
Reviewer recognition:
Both peer reviewers will be acknowledged on the published article by default. The co-reviewer will be listed as having provided a co-review with the lead reviewer. If the manuscript is not ultimately published, both reviewers will stay anonymous.
The lead reviewer is eligible for all of JMIR's Reviewer Incentive Programs as usual. The co-reviewer is not eligible for Karma, but can receive review recognition from Web of Science and ORCID. For this, the co-reviewer can request a certificate of review from ed-support@jmir.org, which they can then submit to Web of Science or ORCID for recognition there.
