What is TrendMD?
TrendMD (http://trendmd.com) is a large network of publishers cross-promoting articles (over 3,600 journals from 300 publishers and over 85 million unique readers per month), explained here.
JMIR Publications (a co-founder of TrendMD*) is using TrendMD routinely to promote/disseminate articles published in JMIR journals across other publishers and journals including for example JAMA or BMJ (see screenshots below).
JMIR articles will appear as "related articles" in articles published in other journals and at other publishers.
Authors of JMIR can purchase additional credits to gain additional clicks to their article from these partner publishers. To do so, please order the TrendMD package on checkout when you pay for the APF (see How can I order/pay for knowledge dissemination add-ons like TrendMD or sponsored Tweets?).
Evidence for Effectiveness
Research has shown that TrendMD increased readership by 49% in a controlled study across 500 JMIR articles (see references below).
Another recently published paper in Scientometrics also shows that dissemination through the TrendMD network increases saves to Mendeley, which may also lead to more citations.
And the latest and strongest evidence for citation advantage of promoted Open Access articles comes from a randomized trial published in 2019: The Citation Advantage of Promoted Articles in a Cross‐Publisher Distribution Platform: A 12‐Month Randomized Controlled Trial (Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. 2019; 1– 18. https://doi.org/10.1002/asi.24330)
A follow-up study was published 36 months later, still observing a citation advantage for papers promoted via TrendMD: Citation Advantage of Promoted Articles in a Cross-Publisher Distribution Platform: 36-Month Follow-up to a Randomized Controlled Trial. J Med Internet Res 2021;23(12):e34051 DOI: 10.2196/34051
Some also cite https://www.jmir.org/2011/4/e123/ as evidence but this is really more evidence for the validity of Altmetrics for early detection of highly cited articles - we find it unlikely that organic tweets increase citation. But a platform like TrendMD actively promotes your article!
The TrendMD Network
The TrendMD Network consists of hundreds of publishers who use the TrendMD widget on their websites to cross-promote related articles across journals and across publishers.
The image below shows how articles published in JMIR journals are promoted on other journal / publisher sites as recommended articles if the content of the article is relevant:

How to Add TrendMD Promotion to JMIR Articles
Authors can pay for this option by adding the option to the APF checkout page (How can I order/pay for knowledge dissemination add-ons like TrendMD or sponsored Tweets?).
As of January 28, 2019, TrendMD will be selected by default with a recommended quantity of 2 packages in APF invoices. If you would like to opt out, please click on the "opt out" link which can be found either on the checkout cart or the invoice.
