The University of Helsinki including Helsinki University Central Hospital and JMIR Publications have agreed to a deal to support eligible authors with unlimited publishing in JMIR's entire gold open access journal portfolio.
The University of Helsinki library is covering the cost of this program, demonstrating their strong commitment to open access initiatives. The agreement marks a step forward for open access publishing and will protect bibliodiversity and academic freedom for researchers at the university and around the world.
What Does the U of Helsinki Deal Mean for Eligible Authors?
This deal provides unlimited Article Processing Fees (APF) waivers in any JMIR gold open access journal for corresponding authors currently affiliated with the University of Helsinki including Helsinki University Central Hospital.
Which Authors are Eligible for the U of Helsinki Deal?
Authors who are affiliated with the university or hospital, i.e. who are students enrolled at or accredited to the institution or who are teaching and research staff employed by or otherwise accredited to the institution (including, but not limited to, guest researchers and professors emeriti). In the case of articles published by multiple authors only the corresponding author may qualify as Eligible Author. In case of several corresponding authors for the same article, only the one submitting the article may qualify as Eligible Author.
Which Papers are Covered by the U of Helsinki Deal?
To receive an APF waiver a paper must:
- Have an eligible corresponding author currently affiliated with the University of Helsinki including Helsinki University Central Hospital.
- Be Accepted for publication between 01 January 2026 and 31 December 2026.
How do Eligible Authors Request an APF Waiver under the U of Helsinki deal?
Authors must request APF waivers during the submission process. To request an APF waiver, the corresponding author's submission form must:
- List University of Helsinki or Helsinki University Central Hospital as the corresponding author's affiliation in the article metadata,
- Use your institutional email address (@helsinki.fi). Other email domains are not eligible.
