The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is an annual metric published by Clarivate Analytics (Web of Science Group) in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). For comprehensive details on JIF calculation, authors are encouraged to consult the Clarivate website directly (e.g., some useful background details are available here, and the JCR annual release is available here).
Note: The JIF is a journal-level metric of excellence and should not be used to evaluate individual articles. Article-level metrics, such as citations to a specific article, altmetrics, and tweetations, are more appropriate for assessing individual research impact. (See also: What are Altmetrics, Tweetations, and the Twimpact Factor?)
JMIR Publications strongly discourages the misuse of JIFs. While we are proud of our positions within the JCR rankings, we emphasize that JIFs should be interpreted responsibly. (See also: What is Impact Factor misuse?)
Clarivate introduced significant changes to JIFs with the 2023 JCR release:
- Expanded coverage: All journals within the Web of Science Core Collection now receive a JIF. This expands eligibility beyond just the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Index (SSCI) to include approximately 9,000 journals from the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).
- One decimal place: JIFs are now reported to one decimal place instead of three. While some journals may appear to have a lower JIF due to rounding, this change is part of Clarivate's initiative to encourage the use of multiple metrics for evaluating impact, moving away from sole reliance on JIF.

* JMIR Medical Education will be included in the 2025 edition of the JCR. However, due to indexing delays, some content was missing from the Web of Science at the time of JCR data extraction. As a result, its profile page will initially display the 2023 profile, with a prominent note indicating that the data for 2024 is forthcoming. The projected metrics are posted on Clarivate's Help page and can be considered official.
†JMIR Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies will not be included in the June release of the JCR, due to content that was missing from the Web of Science at the time of JCR data extraction due to technical delays in indexing. Clarivate has since received all the missing articles that were required to calculate the JIF. The projected metrics are posted on Clarivate's Help page and can be considered official. JMIR Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies will appear in the JCR product itself in the October reload.
