Generally, the JIF is a metric of excellence for a journal, it is not an article-level metric. Article-level metrics are citations to a specific article, as well as altmetrics, tweetations, twimpact factor.

While JMIR Publications is proud of our leading position when ranked by Journal Impact Factor, we also discourage misuse of JIF. Still, our ranking in the JCR is an important validation that even as a small Open Access publisher we can compete with journals published by publishing giants.

 

Changes to Journal Impact Factors from Clarivate

As of the 2023 JCR release, all Web of Science Core Collection™ journals have a Journal Impact Factor (JIF). Prior to this, JIFs were only given to journals in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)™ and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI)™. Now around 9,000 journals from 3,000+ publishers from Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI)™ and the multidisciplinary Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)™ now have JIFs as well. 

Another change is that JIF will now be one decimal place rather than three. Some journals may seem like their JIF has dropped as they are rounded to one decimal place, but actually, that may not be the case. This is part of Clarivate’s mission to level the playing field and encourage the use of a number of metrics to evaluate impact, rather than just JIF.

JMIR Publications Journals Shine in the 2024 Release of Journal Impact Factor by Clarivate

For 10 years now, JMIR is consistently ranked in the first quartile (Q1) in both of its disciplines, medical informatics and health services research, as well as among the over 2000 "Clinical Medicine" journals indexed in JCR.

 

In total, 15 out of the 34 open access journals published by JMIR Publications now have a JIF. Additionally, we have launched more journals in the past two years that are not yet eligible for metrics such as JIF and CiteScore.
