In the context of appearing in a journal title, "JMIR" does NOT stand for "Journal of Medical Internet Research", and if it is in the title of a journal such as "JMIR Mental Health" it should not be expanded to read as "Journal of Medical Internet Research". Please also cite the journal name correctly (e.g. as "JMIR Mental Health"). JMIR is not an acronym in that context, it is a brand/publisher name (much as "BMJ" in "BMJ Publishing" does not stand for "British Medical Journal"). It is now common in publishing that publishers publish a series of specialty journals ("BMC ..", "Lancet ...", "Nature ...") with the (former) flagship journal as "brand" in the journal title.
"JMIR Publications" is the name of the publisher, so "JMIR" in the title of a journal indicates "JMIR" as a trusted brand in the field of scholarly publishing, which is well known for high-quality journals with an emphasis on technology/innovation in health and research (but most of these journals have a scope that goes beyond using the "Internet" as an underlying technology - see "Scope" statements on the individual journal sites).
This is similar to (for example) the "BMJ Publishing Group" - one would not expand the publisher name "BMJ" to "British Medical Journal", although historically this is where the publisher name came from.
While historically, the Journal of Medical Internet Research was our first journal title and established the brand name "JMIR", the other journal titles are independent journals in terms of editorial board and journal scope and policies, while readers can expect the same operational excellence, production values and high standards of peer-review that made the JMIR brand famous.
JMIR is a registered trademark of JMIR Publications since 2013 (Reg Nr 517104, see USPTO link below). Any unauthorized use in journal titles or elsewhere without prior written consent of JMIR Publications is strictly prohibited.
To talk about partnerships to establish new JMIR-branded journals see I have a journal idea or I am a society publishing/planning a peer-reviewed journal - would JMIR Publications be interested in publishing it?. To use our brand in the context of conferences please see I am chairing/organizing/am involved in a conference/workshop. How can I work with JMIR Publications.
Note that JMIR Publications also publishes journals which are not part of the JMIR-series. These are community- or society based journals such as Journal of Participatory Medicine (JoPM, ISSN 2152-7202) (http://jopm.jmir.org) which were acquired by JMIR Publications (e.g. JoPM is published by JMIR Publications since 2017). Needless to say, articles published here have the same production values, but because editorial oversight is often in the hands of a society, editorial standards may differ.
